At AirTekk Comfort Solutions, we care about our customers. Every year we see families leave their cozy homes in the morning, only to come back to freezing indoor temperatures and non-working heating systems. This can be very costly- especially when proper maintenance and observation can prevent it from happening.

The most common reason that a heating or cooling system starts to fail is that they have dirty or neglected filters. In order to keep your heating system running efficiently- frequent changing of your filter is an inexpensive and easy way to stay on top of things.

Air Filters

The most common recommendation is to change your filters every three months. However, depending on where you live, your system’s usage and your indoor environment you might need to change them once a month or sooner.  Homes with pets, excessive dust or smoke will see their filters get clogged at a faster rate than other homes.

If your system has a dirty filter, it makes it harder for the air to flow through and will make the system work harder to maintain that toasty temperature. The excess dirt on the filter can dislodge and be pushed through the filter and start to build-up on internal parts of the unit causing expensive repairs. This debris can even lead to a complete loss of function for your unit.

Frequent filter replacement will-

  1. Extend the life of your heating unit. When dirt is collected on the filter- it gets harder for the air to pass causing the system to work harder. This often causes the motor to overheat. In a good case scenario- a repair person can service the unit- but in a lot of cases, not replacing filters could cause complete failure in the system and require a new unit to be installed.
  2. Reduce energy cost.  The harder the system has to work, the more energy it requires. If the filter is clogged the extra energy it uses can cause a major increase in your bill. A clean filter can save you between 5 and 15 percent on your energy bill. When the average American family spends over $2,000 a year on their energy bill- that kind of savings can really add up.
  3. Provide better air quality. Dirty filters equal dirty air. In homes with pets, pet dander and even other allergens can get caught up in the system and spread can spread through the system and your home. If anyone in the home has asthma or allergies the extra dirt, dust, debris, and dander can cause a lot of complications with their health.

While changing your filter every month is a great start, it is also important to have regular maintenance at the start of the winter season. It is estimated that 45% of a households energy costs are from heating and cooling a home’s empty space. Making smart choices with your home’s heating system can greatly impact your energy bills. AirTekk Comfort Solutions would be happy to schedule an appointment to make sure your unit is working properly so you can keep warm this winter and not just burn money away. Be sure to ask your technician about the best filter for your home and their recommendations for how often your filter should be changed.
